THOUGHT LEADER

Dr. Edward C. Bush is a nationally recognized educational leader, pioneering scholar, and unwavering advocate for the advancement of Black students across the globe. Since 2015, he has served as the President of Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, California, making history as the first African American president of the institution. Under his leadership, the college has gained national recognition for its commitment to racial equity, student-centered reforms, and transformative leadership.
As a scholar, Dr. Bush is a trailblazer in the field of African American male research. He is the co-author of African American Male Theory (AAMT)—the only theoretical framework specifically dedicated to the educational experiences of Black boys and men—and a founding contributor to the “Sankofa Research Model”, the first culturally grounded research methodology for studying Black male learners. Grounded in this seminal work Dr. Bush is a co-author of the book SANKOFA (RE)Search Model: (Re)membering, (Re)storing, and (Re)birthing Black Boys and Men. He has published twelve peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters, influencing national discussions on racial justice, institutional change, and educational equity.
Dr. Bush is a co-founder of A2MEND (African American Male Education Network and Development), a nonprofit organization led by Black community college administrators and faculty dedicated to transforming institutions through culturally responsive mentorship, student advocacy, and leadership development. Over its 18-year history, A2MEND has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships and created global learning opportunities specifically in Africa for hundreds of students across California. As part of its expanding global footprint, A2MEND has also purchased land in Ghana to build the Racial Trauma, Healing, and Wellness Center—a first-of-its-kind space dedicated to restorative healing, cultural reconnection, and research on the intergenerational impacts of racial trauma. The Center will serve as a sanctuary for reflection, scholarship, rites-of-passage programming, and therapeutic practices grounded in African-centered traditions. Considered to be a national thought leader, Dr. Bush inspires educators to reimagine systems, center Black excellence, and lead with vision, healing, and ancestral wisdom.
A visionary architect of educational justice, in his spare time, Dr. Bush serves as the Chairperson of the All-African Diaspora Education Summit (ADES)—a groundbreaking international convening held bi-annually in Ghana, West Africa since 2022. Under his leadership, ADES has become a premier immersive professional development experience that connects educators to African-centered pedagogies and cultural traditions aimed at improving outcomes for Black students. Dr. Bush has made it possible for over six hundred educators and students to travel to Africa, engaging in ancestral dialogue, cultural reconnection, and liberatory learning practices.
Extending this global vision, Dr. Bush serves as the founding visionary and Chair of the Pan-African Virtual College (PAVC), a transnational higher education collaborative connecting California Community Colleges with leading universities and technical institutions in Ghana. The PAVC institutionalized academic exchange, co-develops a culturally grounded curriculum, and creates study abroad, virtual mobility, and credential pathways linking students across the African Diaspora. Through strategic partnerships, Dr. Bush is building a sustainable educational bridge that positions Africa as a co-equal intellectual partner in shaping the future of global higher education.
